Oakwood, Ga. (March 1, 2016) – A long-time Wayne Farms LLC contract farmer has been named one of only five farms in the nation to receive the Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award for 2016 from the US Poultry and Egg Association. Allred Acres of Laurel, Miss received the prestigious award during the 2016 International Production & Processing Expo, in Atlanta.
Allred Acres is owned and operated by Robert and Angela Allred. In addition to raising pullets for Wayne Farms since 1986, the Allreds raise cattle and grow hay. The Allred’s 200-acre farm raises 72,000 birds per flock in six poultry houses.
Allred Acres’ intensive farm management program has been noted by Wayne Farms as a textbook example of a sustainable, quality operation. “The work they put into their farm shows up every day in the quality of product we produce at Wayne Farms,” said Clint Rivers, Wayne Farms Chief Operating Officer. “Our hats are off to the Allreds—this award is well deserved and we couldn’t be happier being in business with Allred Acres.”
Bobby Allred echoed River’s comments, saying the working relationship with Wayne Farms has been solid since it began in 1986, “I’ve worked with Wayne Farms for 30 years—my son grew up in the business and is a partner on the farm today. From day one, just like today, Wayne Farms has been quick to listen to any concerns and work with us,” said Allred. “This is a business as well as a farm, and it’s changing all the time. They’ve helped us stay on top of changes and that has been important to our success and to our farm receiving this award.”
Applicants were rated across the spectrum of modern farm management, including waste management, community involvement, wildlife enhancement techniques, innovative nutrient management techniques, and participation in education and outreach programs. Applications were reviewed and farm visits conducted by a team of environmental professionals from universities, regulatory agencies and state poultry associations. As described by the US Poultry award citation, Allred’s nutrient management plan featured a dual focus on environmental and economic aspects, with 95 percent of litter applied to their own farm. Ongoing soil sampling ensures valuable organic fertilizer is not wasted through super-efficient agronomic litter application. Stormwater runoff is controlled to minimize erosion and impact to surface water, and surrounding areas are graded to manage direction and velocity of water flow. In addition, rotational grazing practices are followed to avoid leaving bare soil that can erode easily during rain events. In the winter they plant 60 acres of clover, rye grass and winter wheat in wildlife habitat areas to benefit wild deer, fox and squirrel population.
The Allreds believe that environmental stewardship, farming and wildlife management are all connected, remarking, “When a farmer carefully and responsibly attends to one, the other two benefit from such practices.”
